How San Diego Homeowners Can Save Big with Solar + Battery Storage

If you have been considering solar for your home, there has never been a better time to make the switch. San Diego Community Power (SDCP) has launched a new solar + energy storage incentive program that offers major cash rebates and ongoing compensation—making it simple and rewarding for homeowners to go solar today.

What Is the SDCP Solar + Storage Incentive Program?

SDCP recently announced a $55 million grant program designed to accelerate clean energy adoption across the region. Through this initiative, *qualifying homeowners can receive cash rebates for new solar + battery storage installations and for adding batteries to existing solar. Through the program, qualifying homeowners, who are also San Diego Community Power customers, can earn the rebate upon installation plus ongoing annual incentives throughout the 5-year program.

Customer Type New Solar & Battery Existing Solar & New Battery
Market Rate (regular rate payers) $350 per kWh $250 per kWh
Nonmarket Rate (CARE program and reduced rate payers) $500 per kWh $350 per kWh

So, if you install a 6 kW solar system + 10 kWh battery (e.g. Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ, LG Chem, etc.), your rebate would be about $3,500 upon installation and system activation.

Rebates are paid directly to the homeowner, delivering thousands of dollars in immediate savings on installation costs. In addition, participants earn ongoing incentives of $0.10 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) throughout the five‑year program. For an average system size, this can add up to as much as $200 per year in extra energy rebates—paid annually by check straight to the homeowner.

How It Works: The Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

When you join SDCP’s program, your home becomes part of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)—a connected network of solar-powered homes that share clean energy back to the grid when demand is high.

Here’s how it benefits you:

  • You’ll sell excess energy back to the grid and receive compensation for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) shared.
  • Participation lasts for five years, during which time you agree to return 50% of your stored solar energy to the grid on select high-demand days.
  • After five years, you can opt out at any time—but you’ll keep the financial and environmental benefits of your solar + battery system long-term.
  • Performance incentives: All participants earn $0.10 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) when they discharge 50% of their battery during the required weekday dispatch window. This window varies but will always occur between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Why Homeowners Should Act Now

This program offers limited-time funding and is expected to reach capacity quickly. Installing solar and battery storage through an SDCP approved provider like Asgard Energy, not only locks in your eligibility for the rebate, but also sets you up to:

  • Cut monthly electricity bills
  • Earn additional income through grid participation
  • Increase home value and energy independence
  • Protect against blackouts and rising utility rates
